Best time to go

The best window for this tour is March-May or September-November, when daytime temperatures are pleasant in both the High Atlas and the desert. In summer (June-August), Merzouga can easily top 40°C at midday, which is why the camel ride is scheduled for late afternoon. Desert nights, however, stay cool year-round: even in peak summer the temperature can drop below 15°C after sunset, and in winter (December-February) it can approach freezing. A warm jacket or sweater is not optional, whatever month you travel.

Temperatures by season

One detail worth knowing if you’re traveling in January or February: the Tizi n’Tichka pass occasionally closes for a few hours after heavy snowfall, which is exactly why drivers on this route carry snow chains through winter.

Difficulty level and who it’s for

This tour is rated easy, but it does involve several hours of driving each day on winding mountain roads, particularly crossing the High Atlas, which can cause mild motion sickness for sensitive travelers (we suggest sitting up front and bringing your usual anti-nausea medication if needed). The camel trek lasts about 30-45 minutes on sandy terrain: it suits most ages and fitness levels, but isn’t recommended for travelers with serious back problems or in late pregnancy — in these cases we’re happy to arrange a 4x4 transfer to camp instead. Kids generally love it, as long as they’re comfortable sitting still in the saddle for the ride.

What to pack

Comfortable, breathable clothing for the day, a warm jacket or sweater for desert nights, sunglasses, a hat and high-SPF sunscreen are the essentials. Add closed, comfortable shoes (not sandals) for the uneven, sandy ground around camp, a small torch or headlamp for after dark, your own toiletries (camps provide the basics but with limited choice), and some cash in Moroccan dirhams for tips and extras, since cards aren’t always accepted at camps and villages along the route.

Pickup and what a typical day looks like

This is a private tour: the 4x4 or AC minivan, the driver-guide, and the pace of the trip are yours for all three days, not shared with other travelers you don’t know. Pickup is from your riad or hotel in Marrakech in the early morning, since crossing the High Atlas and reaching the Dades Valley by afternoon needs most of daylight on day one. Each day’s driving is broken up with stops — Kasbah visits, gorge walks, photo points — rather than being a straight transfer, and your driver-guide adjusts the pace on request if anyone needs a longer break.

Money, connectivity, and other practicalities

Morocco’s currency is the dirham (MAD), and it’s a closed currency — you can’t buy it before arriving, so plan to withdraw or exchange after landing. Cards are accepted in Marrakech hotels and larger shops, but the riad in the Dades Valley, the desert camp, and roadside stops mostly run on cash, so carry enough dirhams for tips, drinks, and souvenirs along the way. Mobile signal is solid in Marrakech and most towns on the route but drops out in stretches of the High Atlas and the open desert, and while riads and the desert camp usually have WiFi in common areas, don’t count on a steady connection for the full three days.
