Best time to go

As with all our desert itineraries, the ideal months are March-May and September-November, when daytime heat in Merzouga is manageable and nighttime temperatures, while still dropping, stay milder. If you travel in peak summer (June-August), the sunset aperitif and candlelit dinner are deliberately scheduled after sundown, once the intense midday heat (often above 40°C) has passed. In winter, desert nights can approach freezing: the Royal Desert Camp tents are heated, but a light down jacket still belongs in your bag.

The Royal Desert Camp’s heated tents make winter nights genuinely comfortable, which is worth knowing if you’re weighing a low-season honeymoon against the busier spring and autumn dates.

Difficulty level and who it’s for

This tour is rated easy, but it involves 4x4 transfers of up to 3-4 hours on some days, including the scenic crossing of the Tizi n’Tichka pass in the High Atlas. Day three, entirely dedicated to desert exploration, includes quad biking across the dunes: it’s suitable even for first-timers thanks to the initial safety briefing, but not recommended during pregnancy or with significant back problems — in that case you can comfortably stay in the accompanying 4x4 instead. This tour is especially popular with honeymooners and couples celebrating an anniversary, thanks to its relaxed pace and attention to privacy.

What to pack

Along with comfortable daytime clothing, bring something a little more elegant for the candlelit gourmet dinner in the desert: many guests like to dress up a bit for the occasion, though it’s by no means required. A warm jacket for desert evenings remains essential, as do closed shoes for sandy terrain and high-SPF sunscreen. If you own a wide-angle lens, this is the tour to bring it on: between the Erg Chebbi dunes and the Sahara’s light-pollution-free night sky, photo opportunities are endless.

Your dedicated guide meets you at your Marrakech hotel or riad, and the Toyota Land Cruiser and driver-guide stay with you — not swapped out or shared — for the full four days. Because the pace is deliberately unhurried compared to our classic tour, stops are longer and less rushed: time for a proper coffee at Ait Ben Haddou, a slower walk through Todra Gorges, a sunset that isn’t cut short by a schedule. If you’re arranging this around a flight, a proposal, or an anniversary, tell your booking contact — timings and small extras (a cake at the camp, a specific room) can usually be arranged around it.

Money, connectivity, and other practicalities

Morocco’s currency is the dirham (MAD), a closed currency you can’t buy before arriving, so plan to withdraw or exchange after landing. Five-star riads and the Royal Desert Camp generally accept cards, but smaller stops along the route and tips for driver and camp staff run on cash, so carry dirhams regardless of how upscale the accommodation is. Mobile signal is solid in Marrakech and most towns on the route but drops out in stretches of the High Atlas and the open desert, and while the camp has WiFi in common areas, treat the desert nights as a genuine break from connectivity rather than a guarantee of a stable signal.

How this differs from our classic 3-Day Tour

Our 3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Tour follows a similar route but with a more essential approach: one night in a traditional riad and one in a standard desert camp (still with private bathroom and hot shower), without the extra day of desert exploration, the quad biking, the Gnawa music performance in Khamlia, or the dedicated chef. This 4-day tour is built for travelers who want more time and more comfort in the Sahara, or for special occasions like a honeymoon or milestone anniversary, while the 3-day tour remains the top choice for those with a tighter budget or schedule.

Khamlia, the village you’ll visit during the desert exploration day, is home to descendants of enslaved people from sub-Saharan Africa and today is one of the main custodians of Gnawa music, a spiritual genre recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019, whose hypnotic drumming and chanting have influenced international musicians from Jimi Hendrix to Robert Plant.
